My American Dream

Chicago, Illinois

  • 'My American Dream' portrays an intricate landscape of a complex and perpetually shifting identity in America. These images, in turn, move like dreams and daydreams, in between thoughts and afterward, with no answers and no clear-cut solutions on what it means to truly be an American without the biases of the photographer and the photographed, the editor, and even the viewer.

America means many things to many people. It is a vast land connected by communities and divided by languages, culture, and even state lines. These physical and cultural boundaries define what an American is and aspires to be by race, class, religion, education, and, in some cases, even by the shoes one wears.

Examining this point, I have documented a wide range of borrowed, invented, and cultivated identities that may seem reasonable in those subjects' lives but may not seem so from an outside viewer.

'My American Dream' thereby ascertains how self-expression and personal personas define our lives and determine our relationships with others.

Through these images, I aim for the viewer to discover themselves in

others' likeness. Seeing how others live is a way to look inward at our own lives. 'My American Dream' and its diverse cast is a mirror. No one wants to feel like the other, but, in truth, everyone is the other.
