Through constructed scenarios, this project examines family, place, obligation, and guilt against the backdrop of Taiwan's geopolitical situation. Edict Pietas is structured around a daily self-deception: the belief that I can fulfill two conflicting obligations simultaneously. I live in Taiwan, married into a Taiwanese family, rooted in a place whose sovereignty is not guaranteed. My mother lives alone in Florida. Staying means she grows old without me. Leaving means forcing my wife to abandon her family in the face of an uncertainty that goes beyond the personal. In either version, someone is left behind. Rather than accept this, I reach for systems of understanding. Edict Pietas moves between constructed scenarios and staged rituals. The work does not resolve the question of abandonment versus betrayal. It simply holds them in view.
