Movement is often perceived as intangible, an ephemeral force that exists in transition. In “The Fold of Unfolding Motion”, I challenge this notion by exploring how movement itself can become an object, while objects like fabric, light, and the human form dissolve into movement. Through the interplay of long exposure and choreography, I investigate the transformation of motion into a tangible entity and the dissolution of the material into fluidity.
In this work, movement does not merely exist in the body but extends beyond it, captured and suspended through photographic techniques. The use of long exposure allows motion to be layered, forming sculptural traces that linger within the frame. A dancer’s fleeting gesture, once imperceptible, becomes solidified, an artifact of time made visible. These images reveal movement as something that can be shaped, molded, and preserved like an object, yet still embody the essence of motion.
Conversely, objects such as fabric cease to be static props and instead take on a life of their own. As dancers manipulate the material, it becomes an extension of the body, responding with its own kinetic energy. Fabric, caught mid-flight, appears animated, alive with the momentum of the dance. In these moments, the object transcends its materiality, becoming inseparable from the movement that propels it.
This project is a meditation on the fluid boundaries between stillness and motion, form and formlessness, presence and disappearance. “The Fold of Unfolding Motion” invites viewers to reconsider the nature of movement and materiality, illustrating how each can exist in a state of constant transformation. Through photography, I seek to blur the lines between body, fabric, and motion, between what is seen and what is felt.
