People and Porches
Savannah, Georgia

-
Living and walking around Savannah, GA, I often find myself drawn to the variety of porches that line the streets cluttered and unkempt, others meticulously organized, and some even abandoned.
These spaces, often overlooked by passersby, have a unique story to tell. I frequently wonder about the people behind these porches- who they are, and what these spaces reveal about them?
A porch is a fascinating paradox. It is both a private sanctuary and a public display. For many, it's a safe, personal space, yet it exists in full view of the world, giving insight into the lives of those who inhabit it. As the first thing one sees when approaching a home, a porch offers a glimpse into the character of its owner and the way they interact with their environment. How a porch is decorated, maintained, or even neglected speaks volumes about how it is used and its role in daily life.
In this project, I aim to document the many forms of porches I encounter, capturing both their physical appearance and the stories they hold. I want to go beyond just photographing the space itself; I want to include the owners of these porches and explore how they use the space and what it reflects about their lives. Each portrait will tell a story not just of the porch, but of the person who has shaped it revealing how the space functions as an extension of their personality, their daily routines, and their sense of home. Through this project, I hope to create a visual narrative of these unique spaces, showing how they function as both a personal refuge and a public statement.
