Found in the Forest

Saint Paul, Minnesota

  • As a photographer who deeply connects with the natural world, I have always looked for themes that allow me to get close to capturing the essence of nature without being overt. The subject matter of this series, feathers, started appearing in my path during the summer of 2023 while walking in the woods of my cabin in Northern Minnesota. As incredibly beautiful found objects, I was overjoyed with excitement at how visually stunning, delicately detailed, and incredibly fragile each one was. I felt compelled to do a photographic study and felt that I might have found the subject that can translate my ideas into meaningful imagery.

Artistically, I wanted to craft images that were very graphic and illustrative, that highlight and draw out the multidimensional qualities of nature and the world we live in. While creating the collection, many themes emerged that I hadn’t foreseen – relationships, families, identity, just to name a few. My hope is that the resulting collection translates the complexity, simplicity, fragility, power and fleeting beauty of nature by focusing on this familiar and overlooked genus.
