An architectural study of the 2021 Dixie Fire scar, After the Burn witnesses the transformation of a scorched forest into a collection of monolithic charcoal sculptures, exploring the quiet space between ecological catastrophe and recovery. My approach to these forms is deeply inspired by Richard Avedon’s portraiture, specifically his use of a stark, neutralizing white background to isolate and elevate his subjects. By isolating these charred remains against a clean, white void, I remove the distraction of the surrounding debris and force an intimate confrontation with the subject. This "portrait" style allows each tree to stand as an individual witness—a sentinel whose texture, scars, and posture reveal a singular history of survival and transformation.
