We Passed In Peace

Atlanta, Georgia

  • For generations, the Arctic has captivated the imagination of adventurous souls, drawing them to its remote expanse in search of glory, scientific exploration, and self-reflection. This landscape tells a profound tale of the struggle between life and death, and the delicate balance of light and dark. Central to this narrative is the Arctic landscape itself—a formidable entity to be both feared and respected, whose menacing beauty evokes visions of icy mirages and haunts our dreams with an unyielding, cold embrace. From a very young age, I have felt the gravitational pull to the north by absorbing stories and artwork of early explorers as they journeyed to this land. I wondered at the kind of impact seeing this landscape has on a person, and I aimed to find out.

In the Spring of 2024, I was honored to participate in the Arctic Circle Art & Science Residency, an expedition deep into the heart of Svalbard’s Arctic terrain. Boarding a classic tall ship transported me back to the era of early human exploration that had so captivated by childhood. It was the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to experience such an expedition in a way that closely resembled that of early explorers who wrote of their encounters. Like them, I sought to find myself amid the monumental landscapes that have long inspired such stories. With each moment, I looked for glimpses of when the harsh landscape would unveil its true essence as darkness reluctantly gave way to light. Throughout my journey, I grappled with a blend of exhilaration and fear—a realization of my insignificance amid the vastness, feeling like a mere void on the brink of being swallowed.

As I sailed peacefully across this breathtaking expanse, witnessing the profound beauty that often exists only in dreams, I was reminded of the ongoing struggles of the Arctic and its uncertain future. Through my work, I hope to capture these dualities and explore how this intricate story continues to unfold, inviting viewers to engage with the complexity and mystery of this majestic landscape.
