Living in California in the 1970s had a profound effect on me. My time there was short in span but long in impressions. Each place I lived had its own people, its own character, its own story; an apartment in Hollywood, a home in the hills of Marin, a bungalow by the beach in Venice.
California is a land of dreamers. I knew many that lived the dream and knew many who were lost to it. Discovering and reclaiming these photos revealed a time of wonder, a playful moment in a park, a quiet gathering on a bench, a celebration in the streets. For many years this work has remained dormant. But then, a multi-year’s long project of scanning, archiving and cataloguing thousands of negatives, put a light on a time, place and people, that had previously only existed in memory. The project reveled itself to me.
