In solitude where we are least alone

-
In solitude where we are least alone evokes a mysterious, psychological natural environment. The photographs depict a continuous transformation of elements through time and are intended to encourage inquiry and self-reflection. The series marks the beginning of a new relationship to photography for me as I move beyond narrative concerns and allow questions to animate my work.
An important through line in the work is the concept of limen, which is Latin for threshold. A liminal state lies between; it is where something is about to turn into something else. This relates to the materiality of the ever-changing elements I photograph. The transformation is continuous; nothing is fixed. Water drips from an icicle, deep shadow envelops a stream, morning light reflects off the marbled surface of water. The elements that I photograph are in flux, and so are humanity, history, and the caprices of those in power. Through my images, I intend to elicit the sense of searching, aloneness, and solace that I feel in the environment, as well as the sublime nature of our kinship with the earth.
I employ a symbolic use of the medium. Through my formal and material choices, printing method, scale, and arrangement of the work, the photographs are intended to be open, elliptical, and indeterminate to allow space for the viewer to enter the landscape and have their own experience. At the heart of my work is an acknowledgment of the unknown—a willingness to stand at the edge of understanding, to receive rather than impose, to attune and listen to nature's inevitable whispers of change. I believe it is more important than ever to step out of the noise, distraction, division, and fear, and into the present. And transform feelings of overwhelm and emptiness into possibility and spaciousness. -
